Electric vehicles (EVs) are all the rage in Amherst, NY because of their emissions-free powertrains. However, Hyundai has taken EVs to the next level, with cars and SUVs that are elegant and energetic. The Ioniq 5 debuted last year, while the Ioniq 6 is an all-new model. While they're both eco-friendly vehicles, they're dramatically different in many ways. Northtown Hyundai has provided the following comparison to help you decide which one to buy or lease.

Body Style and Size

While the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a crossover SUV, the Ioniq 6 is a low-slung sedan. The Ioniq 5 is more than 6 inches shorter than the Ioniq 6, so it's a bit easier to maneuver through tight spots in Buffalo.

Engine Power

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes standard with a 58-kWh battery pack and a 125-kW electric motor that produces 168 horsepower. Two other powertrains are available in the Ioniq 5, including one with a 77.4-kWh battery pack and dual electric motors that combine to put out 320 horsepower. Amherst drivers will appreciate that this setup can rocket the Ioniq 5 from 0 to 60 in around five seconds.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 comes with a 53-kWh battery pack and a single rear motor that combine to make 149 horsepower. It also offers a dual motor configuration that produces 320 horsepower.

Range and Charging

You don't want to run out of juice before you make it to Buffalo, so it's crucial that your EV has a long driving range. When equipped with the Long Range powertrain, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can travel up to 303 miles on a full charge.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 can go even further on a single charge. SE Long Range models have a 361-mile driving range. Both the Ioniq 6 and the Ioniq 5's batteries can be recharged from 10% to 80% in around 18 minutes at DC Fast-Charging stations.

Cabin Layout and Materials

Inside, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is charmingly simple and uncluttered. Two large screens dominate its low-slung dash, and it has many surfaces that were made from sustainable materials such as recycled plastic bottles and plant-based yarns.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has a similarly minimalist cabin design, but its horizontal dash houses twin 12.3-inch displays under a single pane of glass. It also has many of the same interior materials, except that it adds carpet made from recycled fishing nets.

Cargo Space

Since the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an SUV, it has ample space for Amherst drivers to put their suitcases or shopping bags. There's 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats and 59.3 cubic feet of room with the rear seats folded down. A small trunk in front, or frunk, offers enough additional space to put a handbag or a charging cable.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a car, so it only has 11.2 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk.

Infotainment Technology

Both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 have attractive infotainment systems with large touchscreens and clever customization options. Both vehicles also come standard with Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone integration.
