It's arguably the biggest, most prestigious award in the U.S. auto industry: The 2021 Hyundai Elantra, available at Northtown Hyundai in Amherst, NY, was voted the winner of the 2021 North American Car of the Year award by the North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) automotive media jury.

This was the second time the Hyundai sedan has won Car of the Year, having earned the award previously in 2012. Out of all cars produced in North America, only two others have won the award more than once, and this is Hyundai's third Car of the Year honor. The winner was announced during a virtual event earlier this year. The Elantra is a sedan that's already impressing some even more important judges: Our many wonderful customers who drive the new Elantra sedan every day on the streets of Buffalo and Williamsville, NY.

A Grateful Acceptance from the Top

José Muñoz, Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America and Hyundai Motor America, accepted the award for Hyundai, saying, "I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the entire company, our Alabama and Ulsan plant employees who build Elantra and our dealers," he said, adding that "Elantra is a symbol of our blend of dynamic design, advanced technology and great fuel economy. Elantra customers are going to experience all of the hard work and dedication that went into making this class-leading car."

Automotive Competition at the Highest Level

The jurors for the North American Car of the Year competition tested and evaluated more than 40 outstanding new vehicles before voting to select the top three cars, utility vehicles and trucks to be the finalists for 2021. Now in its 28th year, the North American Car of the Year awards are chosen through a series of three separate votes by a diverse jury of automotive journalists from a wide variety of media outlets in the United States and Canada. Jurors evaluate the finalists based on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

Founded in 1994, the North American Car of the Year awards are the longest-running new-vehicle awards not associated with a single publication, website, radio or television station. Because of the jurors' independence, these awards are among the most respected in the industry.
